Mommy Mojo: Owning Your Ambition – It’s Okay To Want To Make Money

It’s amazing how many women entrepreneurs are EMBARRASSED to admit that they would like to make money, a lot of money, six-figure money.

That somehow if you are a Stay-at-Home-Mom (SAHM) you must be shy and only whisper gently into the night your hopes and dreams of building a business from home. For the most part, men are expected to set high goals for their professional life and if they decide to write a book about it to make even more money, all the better!

Yet, there is a subtle yet strong meta-message that we women should set our sights a little lower and for goodness sake, stop TALKING about them. And if you choose to advertise about your goals, your product, your book, or your successes, well then…you know the name you are called.

So what to do?

First, just know that there is a double standard out there and that you are not crazy for wanting outward, financial success. Period.

You are not crazy for believing in your product, service, or book so much that you are willing to invest not just time, but capital. What? Your family’s money? Society seems perfectly fine with women who toil and toil without measurable results and people applaud their dedication. But if you go openly sell something society is like ‘Whoa there, Nelly’.

Call me crazy, but I do dare to do more than just dream. I research my market. I spend money on efficient advertising. I make dividends off of my investment. All by myself.
It turns out, just like voting, the right to stand on equal footing with men and say, “I want to make a six figure income off of my idea,” is going to have to be earned and then allow society to catch up. The sooner you accept this fact, the better things will go.

How to Start Owning Your Ambition

If you have a product, service or book (or even if it’s just an idea for a product, service or book), it’s time to set your goals and get started!

#1: Research the Market – Research the hole in the market where your goods would fit. Research your competition. Even contact them. You will be surprised how friendly people are and how willing they are to help someone just starting out.

#2: Get your Social Media Platform Up – Set up your profiles on Twitter, Facebook, LinkedIn and GoodReads for authors. Social media is a fantastic platform to test market your goods/services without paying a dime.

Research how many people on social media are interested in what you have to sell. Talk to them. Don’t sell to them yet, just talk. Get random, valid feedback before you start to sell. Now is the time to find out if people need a new type of organic diaper rash cream, before you spend a thousand dollars in packaging and advertising.

#3: Go for It! – Once you have tested the market and made sure there is demand for it, go for it! Start small, following the test, prove then expand formula (spending big money on the front end is seldom beneficial). Remember, you have access to invaluable feedback through social media and face-to-face networking groups.

#4: Whatever You Do, Do NOT Apologize – Through each and every step of the way, do not be SHY. Do not hesitate to discuss pricing. Do not undercut yourself by apologizing or mumbling or looking away when you talk about your product or service.

You have every right to sell and make a great living as anyone else. The sooner you believe that, the sooner your customers will too!
