Business 101: Social Media Etiquette – Good Intentions or Not, Spam IS Spam
Posted by Grandma Mary on September 8, 2011 · 12 Comments
This post is going to irritate some people. This may make people mad. Heck, I may even be un-friended or worse, un-liked! But it needs to be said. Sending out repeated mass e-mails to all your Facebook Friends or LinkedIn connections is spam (and that goes double for links spamming @ replies on Twitter).
Maybe you are a non-profit and trying to get the word out about your cause. Maybe you have an event you are trying to promote. That still doesn’t mean you can send out repeated mass e-mail messages via ANY social media platform.
You should have an e-mail list that people have opted into for messages about your events or about your cause. E-mail services such as Constant Contact, iContact, aweber or MailChimp will help you manage your opted-in e-mail list.
Just because someone is your Facebook friend, LinkedIn connection or Twitter follower doesn’t mean that you can spam the crap out of them.
Don’t get me wrong. I’m all about using social media to promote your business or cause. Let’s just be reasonable. Use it the right way. Don’t use social media for mass mailings just because they are available.
The trouble with Facebook e-mail is that you cannot control the privacy. You cannot BCC people so anytime someone responds to the e-mail everyone is copied on that response. The message above was sent to 172 people. That is spam because I did not opt-in to receive this mass message. If you do this, I guarantee you will lose friends!
But what if it is for a good cause? Still spam. In fact, you may get banned from sending Facebook e-mails if you send too many e-mails with links in them. Facebook monitors e-mails and links and flags accounts that send too many (check out their post about e-mail spam).
And for goodness sake, don’t post links on every friend’s Facebook Walls about your cause or event. That’s just like putting a yard sign in someone’s lawn without asking. Not good.
Another form of spam is on Twitter to @mention everyone you know to ask them to retweet your link. Yikes! Who wants to follow someone who’s Twitter stream is just full of you asking every single person you know to retweet your tweet? Nobody. Those accounts quickly get blocked and reported as spammers.
So how do you get the word out about your cause or event in the right way?
You can still post a gazillion Facebook Updates, LinkedIn Status updates or Tweets about your cause or event (although perhaps a gazillion is overkill). You can have a Facebook list or LinkedIn list of people who are interested in hearing about your events. And you can encourage people to share this information with their communities.
How to Get the Word Out the Right Way
#1: Post status updates about your event or cause via Facebook, LinkedIn and Twitter – Vary your posts so you aren’t always talking about the same thing. Sprinkle in helpful articles, tips, thank you messages to people who help further your cause or event.
#2: Ask people to help get the word out – You can ask people in your status update to click share to help you reach more people. You can also individually e-mail your friends to help or ask your e-mail your opt-in list to help spread the word. Just don’t do a mass mailing on your Facebook or LinkedIn profiles. If you have been doing a good job helping other people with their causes and promotion, then they will help you.
#3: Run a fun contest or event that naturally gets shared – Making things fun will promote natural sharing of your event without you having to even ask.
#4: Create a Friends List or group who does want to help your cause – Start building connections who will help your cause by sharing it on Facebook, retweeting it or sharing the posts on LinkedIn. You can build this list through a Friends List and call it “Supporters” or something like that. Then you can e-mail this list every time you have something you would like them to share if they can (make sure they all agree to the group mailing prior to sending it!) You can also Tag people in LinkedIn and send a group message. Again, make sure people agree to a mass mailing.
#5: Enlist the help of retweet buddies – You can also personally ask people for a retweet who have previously said that they will retweet your special tweets. Many people have either a formal or informal agreement that they will retweet your tweets if you will retweet theirs. Not every tweet of course, just the tweets where you need more visibility. Again, make sure you are reciprocating their good deeds!
Now, I am no angel. I admit I have used the mass mailing feature on these services. It’s tempting to try and get the word out! But I’m improving and setting policies so I don’t fall off the spam-wagon. The big thing to remember is to continually add value to your community and make sure you aren’t constantly promoting. I don’t want you to get banned, blocked, unliked, unlinked or hidden. The horror!

Posted by Grandma Mary on December 7, 2010 · 3 Comments
I’m so sick and tired and cranky with all the blog posts and coverage of big business Facebook Pages. I understand that these fancy-schmancy pages can inpire you to do cool things. But not all small businesses have the budget to hire a big design team to get the fancy-schmancy stuff.
But that said, you can have your Facebook Page make you look like a rock star with a pretty small budget. And just because you don’t have all the fancy-schmancy graphics doesn’t mean that you can’t benefit from Facebook Pages.
BIG Ideas from Small Businesses who are Doing Facebook Right
First of all, he has a lovely Welcome Page that shows his personality, a couple of photos, call to action by telling you to click the like button and a special offer. This custom tab was created by the free version of www.Pagemodo.com.
Then he has an easy link in the bio box to get to his website and his calendar. Don’t make people search for it on your info tab, put it in this box to make it more accessible. His wall contains a variety of posts. He doesn’t just pitch his business but he shows his portraits, imports his blog and has some posts thanking his clients. All good business.
Great use of photography on this site – it helps when your subject is cupcakes! They are a mobile cupcake company and use Facebook to let people know where they will be with their cupcakes. Great use of tagging to show people where they will be. Plus the photography showcases their new products.
Great welcome page with a video demonstrating the product. Followed up by a recent Giveaway on her page. She has a variety of posts and also does a good job of creating buzz with her posts and uses her personal page to tag her Facebook page and connect her personal friends with her page in a variety of ways.
The best part of this page is the before and after pictures. That’s fun. Plus it gets your community involved and helps your page go viral. Business 101: You Weren’t Raised in a Barn – Get Some Social Skills! How to Avoid Committing the Social Media Sins
Posted by Grandma Mary on November 4, 2010 · 18 Comments
New to social media? There are a few ‘Deadly Sins’ you need to know about. (Sorry, these sins make me a little cranky so pardon the venting). The original title of this post was “The 7 Deadly Sins of Social Media”, but once I got started, I found that I couldn’t stop a just 7 and the term “sins” may be a little harsh.
There is no Social Media Hell that you are going to rot in if you commit these boo boos. But you will annoy your audience and lose friends and followers in the long term. If you are going to spend the time on social media, do it right.
How to Avoid Committing the Social Media Sins
• Auto DM’s – Don’t do them! Many people set up an automatic Direct Message to be sent to anyone who follows them on Twitter. This is spam. And annoying. No one wants to make money with your Online EZ Cash Wealth System or click on your link to your special Welcome video. Even if you are just saying “Hi. Thanks for following me!” it’s not effective. Have a real conversation on Twitter instead.
• Asking random people on Twitter to look at your website with the @reply tag – Come on people! You wouldn’t walk up to someone in a networking meeting or Chamber event and say “Hi, do you want to buy my stuff?” so don’t do that.
• Asking people you barely know on Twitter to retweet your sales pitch – It’s okay to ask your Twitter friends who support you and have an audience that would benefit from your offer to retweet your stuff. But don’t go asking everyone you know in a personal DM or @reply to retweet your sales pitch. Form relationships and people will naturally retweet you. You can say “Please RT” at the end of your tweet and the people who want to retweet you will.
• Crashing Twitter chats and spam your link to your website – If you are coming to a Twitter chat, participate. You might as well streak through the Superbowl with your website attached to your heiny – that would be more effective.
Facebook Sins
• Friending random people and then posting your link to your website on their wall – Again, see the example number 2 above. It’s not nice.
• Liking a Page and posting your link to your website – Same thing here. We don’t want to lose weight or drink crazy juice and if we do, we’ll do our own research. If the Page invites you to post your website, then by all means, share. Or if you have some information that will benefit the audience and they are discussing it in a post, put a link there. Add value!
• Tagging people in Videos and Notes that have NOTHING to do with them – This can be tempting. If you tag someone there is a higher possibility that they will see your Note or Video. Don’t give in – it’s not effective; it’s annoying.
• Inviting your entire friend list to an event that doesn’t pertain to them at all – Don’t do it. This is especially true of local events. Don’t invite your friends in New York to come to your Open House in San Francisco. Then all the reminders that get sent out are just going to annoy them. Make Friends Lists so that you can invite relevant people to relevant events (get the how-to tutorial here).
Other than that, there is no exact right formula. If you are talking to people and connecting, then you are doing it right. Just do your best, eat your vegetables and get your elbows off the table.
