Momentum Monday: Experiencing Motivational Fatigue? How to Deal with Business Burnout
What you don’t often hear about many success stories is the daily grind that went into achieving it. Behind every success story is the boring ritual of showing up every day and getting the stuff that needs doing done.
Perhaps the reason you rarely hear about it is that it’s not the exciting entrepreneurial drama that makes for good news. People would rather hear about the big risk takers who gambled and won. The truth is that most successes aren’t the result of dazzling drama, but the result of years of consistent hard work.
So what happens when you hit the wall? When you get tired of the daily doing? When you begin to dread your daily routine of getting things done? What happens when motivational fatigue sets in?
How to Deal with Burnout and Get Back to Getting Things Done
#1: Acknowledge the Feelings – Don’t turn feeling burnt out into a reason to beat yourself up and stink deeper. Simply acknowledge the feeling and accept it for what it is and move on. If anything, take the opportunity to look behind the feeling and see if there’s any way to get rid of the duties that are dragging you down.
#2: Seek Support – Talk to a colleague, ask for additional help in your business or at home until you feel caught up. Often motivational fatigue is the result of feeling overwhelmed, a sign that you are trying to take on too much.
#3: Find Your Energy Button – Tackle the tasks that boost your energy and make you feel like you can do anything! Often we fall into the habit of doing the daily drudgery, which can quickly start to feel like a chore.
#4: Protect Your Downtime – Don’t let your work spill into your personal time. Spending time with your family and living your life is the best way to break out of burnout. Consider your own self-care to be mandatory!
#5: Use Metrics as Motivation – Track and measure results on a daily, weekly and monthly basis. Not only will this help you focus on doing the right things in your business, but it will serve as that extra bit of motivation when you really don’t feel up to the task.
