This year the theme for International Women’s Day is Make It Happen! Fitting because that’s exactly what so many women do – for their families, in their business and in their lives!
Need to fundraise an extra $10,000 in 8 days? We’re on it before you can even say, “Raffle tickets!” Trying to usher a herd of uncooperative toddlers into a straight line? We got that down to a science!
That’s probably why so many women start businesses. Whether it’s a new product idea created to solve an everyday parenting challenge or a corporate career turned consulting business, women are leading the way in starting small businesses!
But instead of me going on and on about all the amazing, wonderful things women are capable of doing or how you can make it happen for yourself in your business, here’s what some of the amazing women I know had to say:
Erika Napoletano, Author, Speaker, Branding Consultant
“Women can forget about being women and focus on being human beings. When you actively choose to eliminate 50% of the people in this world’s ideas simply because of their gender (men), you’re not doing yourselves any favors. In fact, you’re doing the one thing we’ve fought so hard to make NOT happen. Great ideas for life, love, and business alike can come from anywhere. See what the menfolk have to say. You might be pleasantly surprised.”

“Don’t wait for permission!! Just start doing it in the best way you know how with a try, try and try again attitude. You will learn more by doing than waiting for someone to show you how they do it or think you should do it. Being the best means starting now and finding your authentic and powerful expression at what you do.”

“Raise your hand. Raise it high and raise it often. Women don’t do enough of that and, as a result, they often don’t get the work or the opportunities they want (and which they would, of course, rock). So even if you think you’re not 100% qualified – actually, especially when you don’t think you’re 100% qualified – do me a favor, do yourself a favor, and RAISE THAT HAND. Heck, wave it around a bunch, too.

“Do it scared. The clever marketing team behind the Nike brand have made us all rattle off the words, ‘Just Do It’. How simple are these three words that have circled the globe yet how challenging they are. Just Do It. It seems so simple yet as women we often find ourselves at a loss of time, energy, thinking space, peace and in and through this loss, frustration can creep in and steal our dreams our hopes and our desires and even our passion.
At times, my journey has been one of trial and error whereby I took the advice of Nike and I just ‘Did It’. Some of those moments have been hugely successful and some have challenged my pride and my vision greatly. In saying that, I have really wanted to build something that can withstand the weight of life and it’s pressures as well as something that’s lasting. So, I’ve done many things scared. I’ve taken risks, I’ve said yes when all I wanted to do was say no. I’ve jumped in the deep end without a lifesaver and I’ve hoped for the best. I’ve done things and pushed boundaries that I never realised I could and sometimes didn’t even realise I was.
With vision in front of me, a dream in my heart and a deep desire to make a difference in the lives of others and on the planet I have forged ahead and the journey thus far has been exciting. Having vision has propelled me forward and has caused me to ‘Just Do It’ and ‘Make It Happen’.”

“My motto in life is “Don’t be afraid to ask.” So many of us lose out on opportunities because we’re afraid of being turned down. In order to make things happen, you need to put yourself out there and be okay with the outcome, no matter how it plays out.”

“To me, the phrase “smart women make it happen for themselves” means that women can feel empowered and confident to be successful in business and in life without depending on anyone else for their financial or emotional happiness.
That means trusting our instincts, doing what we know is right, using the tools available to us and stepping out of our comfort zones every day. You can read more about this in Ann Tran’s article Women in Business: Conquering Fear and Gaining Power.
Like I wrote in 5 Things Every Woman Needs to Know Before Becoming an Entrepreneur, “As women, success is in our DNA. Define success in your own way, and then fight like hell to make it happen. When you’ve made it, you’ll look around and realize that anything (and I mean anything) is possible.”
Anastasia Valentine, Author, Speaker & CEO
“All women have exactly what they need within. Hard to believe sometimes but all the resources you need to do/get/have/feel what you want are inside you. The biggest barrier we face is the barrier fear and uncertainty that we put up ourselves. Can you imagine how many great women, ideas, solutions didn’t make change the world because of fear? Transform fear into a beacon. When you feel the fear acknowledge it within. Its your internal monitor that is trying to keep you safe. See it as a beacon that you are about to embark on something bigger and outside your comfort zone. Thank it for the gut check and leverage it and its associated energy and move forward. Feel the fear and do it anyway!”

“One of biggest challenges women have when it comes to making things happen is believing that they can make their vision happen. My tip would be to cultivate a mindset of possibilities.”

“Go after what you want and follow your passion. Stick with your intuition and it will guide you. If it doesn’t make you happy, choose another line of work. Life is too short.”
