Are you tired of listening to your trash talking self? The constant voice of negative criticism that would even make your sharp-tongued mother-in-law look like a saint? You know, the one who says stuff like…

“Who do you think you are anyway?”

“That was a stupid idea – you’re never going to be able to do a good job!”

“With all the time you’re spending on your business, you’re doing a lousy job as a mother!

“With all the time you’re spending taking care of your family, you’ll never be able to give what it takes to make your business a success.”

That’s just a sampling of some of the thoughts you hear from the Inner Critic. Research shows that we “self-talk” about 45,000-50,000 thoughts every single day – with the vast majority of them being negative. There’s apparently a whole world of trash talking – put-downs, skepticism and seeds of doubt – going on between our ears.

And just like kryptonite saps the strength of Superman, having a verbose and unchecked Inner Critic saps the confidence, strength and clarity of you as a Supermom and businesswoman.

Is there a way to say “Oh, shut up already!” and somehow negotiate a ceasefire with your Inner Critic?

3 Simple Strategies for Quieting Your Inner Critic

In fact, if you adopt these strategies consistently, you’ll be able to transform your Inner Critic from an embittered enemy taking potshots at your every move into a valued ally committed to helping you realize your dreams.

Tip 1: Listen Up

Take a moment to actually hear what your Inner Critic is trying to say. Rather than try to dodge the internal barrage, tune in to what you hear. Get curious about the patterns and themes. Trying to ignore your Inner Critic is like waving a red flag to a bull. The dialogue typically gets louder and nastier until you pay some attention to it.

Tip 2: Take Out the Trash

Take the thoughts and energy of your Inner Critic and put it on paper. That way you’re not storing the trash talk in your consciousness. This helps you to take away the emotional meaning of the words and examine them with greater objectivity. You might find that there are some legitimate concerns and issues being raised you are overlooking or need to change so you can take your business to the next level.

Tip 3: Flip It

Ready to forever shift your relationship with your Inner Critic? Then request your internal critic to give you its feedback in the form of questions instead of damning statements.

Strong declarative statements like “You are never going to succeed!” just don’t take you anywhere productive. However, flipping that into a question like “How are you going to succeed in this?” can be very helpful.

Why? The brain loves to answers questions! When asked a question, your mind will immediately start working on coming up with all of the things you would need to have in place in order to be successful.

Stop trying to perform an exorcism of your Inner Critic – it’s not going to work! Instead, let these 3 tips help you start a new era of partnership and understanding so your Inner Critic doesn’t sideline you from your brilliance.
