Ever get just plain stuck trying to come up with a new idea?

Inspiration is everywhere if you take the time to look for it – it’s a matter of learning how to ‘tune in’ to the sources of inspiration and take that raw information and turn it into a business goldmine.

Top 10 All-Time Best EVER Sources for Inspiration:

#1: Crowdsourcing – Benefitting from the collective wisdom of crowds has never been easier with web 2.0 technology. The idea is you pose a question or a problem and source a crowd to solve it, usually with a reward for the best idea.

#2: Trend Spotting Sites – Check out the trend spotting sites for research data on trends. Two favorites are Trendhunter.com and Forrester.com! Beware of information overload!

#3: Industry Competitors – Look at your industry competitors for both ideas and insights on your competitive advantage. What is your competition doing differently?

#4: Business Publications – Poke around in the business books or head over to the magazine stand and flip through the interesting clips section. Inspiration sometimes just pops out of nowhere!

#5: Unrelated Industries – Just because you aren’t serving up coffee doesn’t mean you can’t learn from Starbucks. Look at the strategy behind the brand and you’ll discover an endless source of ideas.

#6: Entrepreneurial Success Stories – Pay attention to both the big-brands and the start-ups for the secret recipe to success. Look at how they do things differently, how they build a buzz and how they deliver the goods to their customers.

#7: The News – Tune into current events and think about how the latest developments will impact your corner of the world. Is there a new problem that needs solving? Is there a new opportunity you can tap into?

#8: YOUR Customers – Tap into their knowledge by 1) Surveying your current customers and ask them what they enjoy about working with you – the answer may surprise you, 2) Paying attention to their most common questions and challenges.

#9: Advertising – Become a student of advertising. Pay close attention to how brands position their products and how they use different advertising media. Believe it or not, the Sham-WOW commercials are a goldmine for product positioning and selling.

#10: The BIG Idea File – Stay tuned. We’ll be bringing you fresh new ideas every Tuesday – from inspiring stories to how-to lists.

All great ideas! My favorite has always been other industries because what can be old hat to them can be fresh and “innovative” somewhere else. But I'd say another great source is just time away from the computer and work–I often get ideas in the shower, when I'm getting ready for bed (and have finally put a memo cube for notes in the bathroom!), or walking the dogs!

Yay, for inspiration!!! :) You know I am a big inspiration girl, so this list is right up my alley! Here are some other suggestions for places to find inspiration: your family and friends, nature, music, art, the grocery store, networking events and last but not least… from within!

I have found that taking just 5-15 minutes to breath and just be (without any technological devices) in the morning- before I do anything else- has a HUGE impact on my level of inspiration.

Your list is fantastic for getting those business inspiration wheels turning! I love the suggestion of getting inspired by your clients. That is so critical! See, inspiration really is all around us, we just have to SEE it! ;) Thanks!

Yes. My favorite is #5. That's my method of choice – I spend way more time researching other industries than anything else. I come up with blog post ideas in photography books, topics for journal articles to write from Scientific American and promotion ideas on the Discovery Channel. Ideas are everywhere.

    Thanks!

Inspiration is a fantastic feeling, you get so jazzed up about ideas that you have. No. 5, 6 and 8 are big sources of ideas for me. I get inspiration from everywhere, from watching Sex and the City DVD's while on the treadmill (last nights inspiration) to people watching in a cafe while drinking my ever inspiring latte. I find that words on a TV show or magazine cover can trigger an explosion of ideas, it just depends on where my mind is at the time. Inspiration is everywhere you just need to go with the flow of it. And it always helps to have a trusty notbeook by your side to capture the ideas generated.

Absolutely love this article series Carla, looking forward to next weeks instalment :)

That’s a very good piece of writing. You never know when you will come across a good idea that would work the best for your business. Our brain in the relaxed state is capable of achieving a great deal and has better thoughts coming and that’s the reason that when there is a requirement to think a way out of a particular problem the think tanks generally tend to move out to a relatively peaceful place to think about the solution.

Filing in my big idea file right now!
