The Magical Land of Momentum Nirvana: MOMeo’s 30 Day Challenge continues with Sandy Grason

[start humming the theme from Mission Impossible] da, da, da, da, da, da, da, da, da………
My mission was to “Write a fabulous post about momentum: how to build it, tips to go from zero to unstoppable,” I accepted and then realized it might be Mission Impossible. Luckily, the message did not self-destruct-so I kept going back to it and asking myself what creates momentum?
I turned, as I always do, to the dictionary to make sure I knew exactly what the definition of momentum is:
force or speed of movement; as of a physical object or course of events;
quantity of motion of a moving body.
Quantity of motion of a moving body
Quantity of motion of a moving body
Quantity of motion of a moving body
Motion of a moving body
Motion of a moving body
A moving body
A. Moving. Body.
There’s the thing: I think this word “momentum” is another one of those words marketers use to sell you shit. The word momentum sounds so…magical. It’s like a magical “place” you can get to one day. One day you’ll reach “momentum” and then you’ll be in the flow and your life will be perfect and you’ll be making millions of dollars and there will be singing and dancing and fairies and sparkly shoes and pretty dresses – right?
Uh, I don’t think so.
I don’t think momentum is something you can “get.” Momentum is the result of something.
I’m going to tell you … but first, let’s look at the definition again, because the clue or the answer to “how do you create momentum?” is there.
Quantity of motion of a moving body.
A moving body.
In order to have momentum or create momentum or reach momentum you have to BE a moving body. It’s not something you can buy or study or learn.
Momentum can only happen to something (or someone) that is already in motion.
I’m convinced that if you ever reach this magical nirvana called momentum, you probably won’t even realize it. I think it might be just another trick your brain plays on you to keep you stuck:
“You know Sandy, if you could just get a little momentum going, you’d have that _________”
You can fill in that blank with whatever you want… a new car, a big house, a fabulous husband, a book deal, lots of new clients, etc, etc, you’re never going to “get there.” (I’m speaking directly to myself now).
I never felt like I had “momentum” on my first book, even in the last moments. After securing an agent, selling it to one of the top personal development publishers in the world, editing the galleys, it was almost ready to go to press – I still felt like I had more to do, it wasn’t quite “there” yet… the perfect foreword had not been secured (we went to press without one), there were several more endorsements I wanted, and on and on and on.
So here’s my tip to having, building, creating momentum:
Stop trying to get momentum and just go do your work. It might not ever feel like you’ve reached this magical momentum place, but you’ll be doing good work in the world, you’ll be helping other people, even if it’s in a small way and those small things that you do each day, will add up to great work and a great life.
And here’s my other tip: before you decide what one thing you’re going to do today to make a difference in the world, take a deep breath and connect to your greatest vision.
The one that whispers to you right before you close your eyes at night, the one you immediately dismiss as a “just a dream,” the glimpse of greatness you catch out of the corner of your eye when you’re not “trying” to be great, the one that makes your heart pound a little faster and gives you butterflies in your belly, you know what I’m talking about. Connect to that… and simply ask “What’s the one thing that I could do today that would have the greatest impact?” and go do that thing.
So, here is your mission if you choose to accept it.
1. Breathe.
2. Connect to your greatest vision.
3. Ask “what’s the one thing I could do today that would have the greatest impact?”
4. Go do that thing, or one thing toward that vision.
5. This message will self-destruct in 30 seconds- get to it!
